Have you given up on your dreams? When you were younger, did you dream of financial freedom? Maybe you wanted to start a business, or have you always wanted your wife to stay home to raise your children?
Do you feel like the dreams you had are slipping away and are out of your grasp? Do you feel hopeless? Are you ready to throw in the towel and lead what Henry David Thoreau referred to as a “life of quiet desperation?”
Thoreau also went on to say that most men went to the grave with the song still in their hearts. In other words, they went to the grave full of regrets for not having lived life to its fullest.
Now as depressing as that may sound, you may actually be closer to achieving your goals than you think. Henriette Anne Klauser, in her book, “Write it Down. Make it Happen,” says…
Life is a Labyrinth
“Life is like a labyrinth, and the path to successful completion of your goal may be filled with blind alleys and dead ends.” She goes on to say that the best way to keep from losing heart is by focusing on the desired outcome.
Klauser’s quote reminds me of something I read about many years ago, called the “corridor principle.” The “corridor principle” suggests that the journey to success is like walking down a corridor or hallway full of doors, and the only way you can see these doors or try to open these doors is to START walking down the corridor.
Start Failing Forward
You cannot “see” the doors or have success in any measure by simply standing at the end of the hallway waiting for things to be just right or for you to figure everything out before you start walking.
No, you have to start walking–start trying things, failing forward as many would say. In other words, you need to get busy, start where you are with what you know, and begin walking down the hallway or pathway that leads to success.
Now, are you going to figure out everything right off the bat? Are you not going to have any problems? Are you not going to have any failures? Is your path to success going to be quick and painless?
I highly doubt it, but that does not mean that it’s too late for you to try or that you shouldn’t try at all. If you have failed in the past, that does not necessarily mean that you will fail in the future.
If you have had difficulty setting and achieving goals in the past, Klauser says the best thing to do is try starting from the destination and then figure out how to get there.
Work Backwards
So you would start with where you want to be and look backward to figure out how to get there.
For example, if you desire a monthly income of say $10,000.00 in your business, start with the $10,000.00 figure and work backward. How much is that per day, and what would you have to do each and every day to earn that amount?
You also need to set realistic intermediary goals as well. Although anything is possible, it is very likely that you will need to work up to the monthly goal of $10,000.00 per month.
So in that case you would want to start where you are and figure out how you can ramp up to that figure as quickly as possible.
Start Walking Down That Corridor
Klauser’s book is an excellent resource for learning more about the power of written goals and how to properly set goals. I think the book is wonderful, and I commend it to you without hesitation.
Don’t give up on your dreams! Napoleon Hill said, that “whatever the mind of man can conceive, it can achieve.” Start building your dreams today!
